Obituary of George M. Berry

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

George Martin Berry, Jr., 86, of Ft. Mitchell, KY and formerly of Independence, KY passed away on Saturday, March 16th after a long battle with dementia. He was proud of beginning his work career delivering Chicago newspapers and finally retiring after 28 years in 1995 as the Director of Distribution Services from the Square D Company. He was an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts for more than 40 years and later served on many local boards including United Way, Northern Kentucky University and NKY Family Health Center. George found great joy in rolling up his sleeves to volunteer at Master Provisions/Isaiah House, City Gospel Mission, NKY Emmaus, Happy Hills Camp, and Family Promise.

While work and serving others dominated George’s life, he made time for racing motorcycles in his twenties.  For many years, summers included taking his family to Lake Cumberland where amateur boating and building a cabin generated so many stories.  Later in life he determined to improve his health and he took up running and bicycling. George’s faith became increasingly important and at First Church of Christ, Crossroads and Immanuel Church he found hope for eternity.

He was predeceased by his grandson Brian Reilly and his first wife, Marianne Berry (née Tracz), his sister Betty Lou (Bert) Anderson, brother Edward (Jeanne) Berry and sister Valerie (Clyde) Schoenneman.

George left behind his loving wife of thirty years, Lori (née McManus), his sister Diane (Joe) DeMonte of Mt. Prospect, Illinois; his children Marty (Sara) Berry; Susanne (Joe) Harris; Diane (Steve) Schadler and Michael (Lisa) Berry; many grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and wonderful friends.

You are invited to bring photos and come to share stories at the Celebration of Life service which will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27th at Immanuel Church, 2551 Dixie Hwy., Lakeside Park, KY 41017.  In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice,  online at St. Elizabeth Hospice or one of the organizations where George passionately served listed above.
