It seems like just yesterday Debbie and I were standing in the recruiter's office together waiting to take our oaths ~ I was alone and Debbie was surrounded by members of her family - she spoke to me first & asked if I was by myself and I told her that I was and she immediately introduced me to her brother and others in attendance - making me feel welcome and comfortable. With just a few words she put me completely at ease. As we were standing their talking I expressed that my entire family was Army and I wish that I was being enlisted by an Army Officer - Debbie started smiling as I talked and told me I could be! That her brother was an Army officer and he was there to enlist her and he could do the same for me. So we enlisted together, both of us administered the oath by her brother, and we began a journey together, as friends and shipmates. We experienced Great Lakes together and became even closer. There were many days while @ Great Lakes that we cried together out of shear frustration and being homesick, and when we graduated we cried together again - but this time it was out of pride. Debbie loved being a sailor, she took pride in every aspect of serving her country, and she was a true asset. She was there for me when my husband passed away in 2005, and was a true friend during many dark days when I tried to shut out everyone. I can remember her telling me that she was going to be my friend, and she was going to continue to be there for me no matter how hard I tried to push everyone else away. And she was there - and she made me smile, and she made me see the joy of living again. Debbie was truly a wonderful and strong woman, and she will be missed by all the lives that she touched.

My condolences to Deb's Family and Friends. Deb was my childhood best friend. We kept in touch over the years. Deb always remembered my birthday. As busy as she was, she called me from Iraq last Sept. to wish me a Happy B-Day. She touched my heart so deeply that day! I will always remember her as an Angel on earth! Now, she is an Angel In Heaven, she will watch over all of us!

Sweet Dreams... I am so much a better person for having met and worked with you. Your determination to be more than you were, inspired me. I told you they would send you to Iraq. You are a flower that can never be picked. I will see your smile and sincerity the rest of my life. I will always be jealous that you had the guts after 40 to serve this great nation...against all odds in a war where their were no front lines. Good bye for now. I hope that you are the first person to explain the great beyond to me, because you were such a good teacher and soldier. Your friend Joseph M. Walter

To Debbie's Family: I lived near Debbie when I was young. When I was 15, I went through a terrible ordeal and Debbie (who was all of 16 at that time) took the time to talk to me and help me. I still remember what she said all these years later. I hope she knew how much that meant to me. My heart goes out to all who loved her. Thank you. Mary Casey-Sturk

“Rain fell Tuesday on the long grass.” “It had been matted by heavy tires of emergency vehicles” echoed Navy Times. It took me back to the night in New York when our unit practiced cadence and marches. We were scheduled to march for the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA ) Admiral and we had to look “smart” Suddenly, we had a torrential downpour. Debbie clad only in a sleeveless top and shorts, started dancing. As we got drenched, Debbie twirled around and swayed her hair in the deluge. She said, “Ahh, this is wonderful.” I called her a fool, and gave her an endearing shove, which was reciprocated and complemented with her reverent smile. I know that she is dancing. . . . It rained Tuesday. Dance.

Debbie you will always be my "Little Buddy". I am a better person for knowing you. What you brought to my life will never be forgotten. You were a true friend and someone who I could always count on. To your family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. You were fortunate to have her as a daughter, sister and an Aunt. Don't worry, knowing Debbie she is looking down with that big smile of hers and thinking only of the good life she had. Always remember life is only as good as we live it and Debbie lived it to the best of her abilities. God bless you all and may he keep you safe forever.
