Obituary of Aleda Smallwood

Aleda Smallwood of Independence, age 98, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Emerald Trace in Elsmere, KY. She was born in Livingston, KY on July 15, 1925, to the late Ora {Stokes} and Russell Pennington. Aleda was dedicated to making her house a home for her family. She was a former member of Grace Baptist Church in Independence, KY. Aleda had a strong faith and read her Bible cover to cover several times. For over 60 years she taught Sunday School and vacation Bible school, mostly to young kids ages 3-5. Aleda had a special place in her heart for all children. In her spare time, she enjoyed needlework, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and most of all spending time with her family. Family and church were Aleda’s biggest priorities in life. She will not only be remembered for her delicious chocolate chip cookies, but also for her warm smile, selfless acts, and her sweet and loving personality. She was a beloved mother, mamaw, and aunt who will be missed beyond measure. 

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, William Smallwood; siblings, Curtis Pennington, Rissie Wagner, and George Pennington; and her daughter-in-law, Linda Smallwood. 

She is survived by her loving sons, Edward Leo (Rhea) Smallwood and David Smallwood; beloved grandchildren, Sheila, Jeff, Katie, Will, Amy, and Chris; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; as well as other friends and relatives who will cherish her memory.  

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM, at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, 11382 Madison Pike Independence, KY 41051. The funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM, at the funeral home. Immediately following the service, Aleda will be laid to rest next to her husband at Independence Cemetery.
