Obituary of Gregory Hitt

Please share a memory of Gregory to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Gregory Steven Hitt, retired First Sergeant and proud 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army, passed away in his Kentucky home on December 15th, 2023. Born on February 18th, 1951 to Donald and Marjorie Hitt, Greg grew up in Newport, Kentucky and was a proud alumnus of Newport High School, class of 1969. At the age of 18, Greg enlisted in the Army, following in his father's footsteps. After serving in the Vietnam war, he re-enlisted with the 101st Airborne and ultimately ended up in Recruiting Command in the Cincinnati tri-state area. Greg earned a Master's degree from Urbana College.

After retirement in 1991, Greg searched for new avenues of employment before returning to his natural element in recruiting. He assisted the Army again, post-9/11, by running a recruiting station in Middletown, Ohio for a short-staffed military. He then took his recruiting talents to education, beginning at ITT and then successfully working his way up to Vice President of Brown Mackie Colleges. Ever proud of his home state and a Kentucky Colonel, Greg had only recently returned to Northern KY to be closer to family.

Greg is survived by his daughter, Lauren (Bryce) Amburn; his son, Aaron Hitt; his grandsons, Noah and Carson Hitt and Zachary and Nathan Amburn; and his brother, Monty (Angel) Hitt.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Marjorie and Donald Hitt, his sister Deborah, and his brother Rick. Greg was a leader, mentor, and friend to many.

A service honoring the life of Greg will be held in early 2024. To leave an online condolence, please visit the corresponding tab on this page.
