I am Leons' x-sister-in-law. I can remember when they moved here from North Carolina, back in 1990ish. I was only 17. Olivia was like 2, and she was so cute, my first niece. My mom loved being a grandma. Anyway as the years went by, I had my first, Kara, in 94'. So I spent alot of time at Leons house, watching boxing and basketball, he loved Georgetown Hoyas. He loved his dogs too, Drago and Kataf. We did alot of BBQs, boy he knew how to grill it up! We went out on the lake to fish and swim, he really enjoyed it. He also liked playing Playstation games. We would play for hours,Road Rash, Boxing, Fighting games. I also remember that he enjoyed music and mixing music he was damn good. Anyway we had alot of good times and he loved all of his girls, Olivia, Bria and Dalya. He always played with them. Things happen and Leon and my sister split up. I didnt keep in touch. I wish I would have. I hope that everyone he touch will remember his big smile and DEEP voice. Im praying for his kids and wife. Im going to keep an eye out for the girls, even though they are all grown up, they will need a little extra help along their journey. You will be missed Leon.

Leon was my son-in-law for quite a few years. He and my daughter got together in Marine Corps. I pretty much insisted that they move to Cincinnati when their 4 years were up. I couldn't drive to New Bern, NC, too often to see my grandbaby; she, Olivia, was the love of my life as soon as she was born. Then came Bria and Dalya. Me and these 3 girls have had some great times together. Leon was always a loving, caring person. And, yes, he could be a bit of a clown. I think he enjoyed life. As young people will be, sometimes he and my daughter were confused and didn't see eye to eye. They split up in 2002, I think. Olivia was 12 years old. Anyway, I do appreciate all the stories from Virginia, 'cause I didn't know much about Leon. I have some photos I will post when Olivia shows me how.

Leon was only part of our family for a very short time, but he loved Mindy and Vanessa with all of his heart. He came to find that we are a very "crazy" bunch. He will certainly be missed.

I am not related to Leon but we went to middle school or back then it was called "junior high school" in Great Bridge! It is there where I began my track career in the 7th grade and Leon was a few years older than me! He would always come up to me and call me "Speed Demon" and that name never left me. Even after many years of not seeing him, I ran into him one time, and he still remembered that name.....its funny how some things never leave you! But Leon, your pain is over and as long as you made things right with God, you are resting in the sweet arms of Jesus! My prayers and condolences are given to the family on this day that God may comfort you during your time of bereavement! Romans 15:13

To Mindy and Family, when I heard of Leon's passing on Tuesday my heart was really saddened. Although I had not seen Leon in a while, I often thought of him and the fun times that we had at grandmomma's house growing up. I can remember when we were little and I would spend the night at grandmomma's and to conserve water grandmomma would make Leon and I share the same bath water. Leon and I would race each other to the tub in order to be first to get the clean water, needless to say, Leon usually would win, boy could he run. As well, I remember those summer days playing under the big tree in the front yard and when we were good grandma would give us each fifty cents and let us walk to Mr. Maj's store. We would get candy and have to bring grandma her favorite drink, Mountain Dew. Leon, although you are gone you will never be forgotten. You will always be our cousin "Mule". We love you and you will forever live in our hearts. And one day we will see you again in a place where there will be no more sickness, Heaven. Love you cuz!!!

This has been a really hard week for my family and I, we were so close when we were kids growing up at grandma Nellie's house playing on her front porch, and when it was warm outside we would play up and down the lane, or in her front yard, we always had to come in before the street light came on up the lane or we would get in trouble, sometimes we would have to get a switch off of the tree and you knew what that meant. We had some good times growing up, my mom(your Aunt Diane)who helped grandma Nell raise you have been talking about you since we heard of your death, it was a shock to the family because we did not know you were sick. We would always talk about you around the holidays or your birthday we would bring your name up and the last picture you sent my mom was on her table with the pictures of her other kids. My moms heart is broken because she always thought that one day you would come back home, she loved you just as she loves me and my sister Keisha, we just hope you knew how much we loved you, we did not talk everyday, every month or every year but the love was still there, we were close growing up, very close and for something like this to happen and none of us to know about your being sick really makes me and my family sad, because if we knew we would have come to Kentucky over the summer to see you, but you are in a better place now up in heaven with your mother(Betty) and your two little sisters and your dad (my uncle Tom). We have lots of pictures of you from the good old days, I will remember you with that big smile on your face, I found a picture at my moms house when we were little I was probably 4 and you were 8 and we were sitting in grandma Nell's rocking chair on her front porch we both had big smiles on our faces, thats the way I will always remember you. I just hope you left this world knowing how much we all loved you back home in Virginia. You will forever live in our hearts (mule).
Your cousin Carla and your Aunt Diane

I have so many memories, but I dont know where to start. I remember when I was younger my dad asked me to get him a beer. I thought it would be funny if I took his empty bottle and fill it up with water, and tell him that I opened your beer for you. So I did, I gave it to him and I laughed so hard, but then I seen his face and he was really mad at me. He yelled at me and I never did that again, thats for sure. I remember over the summer I told him about that and he wasnt mad at me anymore he laughed along with me, cause it was old times. Those were our special times with each other, and there will be more special times in our future. Well dad you are at peace now, and I will be with you too someday. Rest in peace dad you will always be in my heart. I love you.

Words can not express my sadness but most of all the frustration that I and my family feel for my cousin Leon. His immediate family had no idea that he was sick and at the point of death. Although it may or not have been his request our hearts are overshadowed with sadness and shock. Leon was known by those who grew up with him as, " mule" . Often times I would ask my aunts had they heard from him. The last time I saw him was at a family gathering at my father's house in 2002. He also leaves with him a host of family and friends who grew up with him in the city of Chesapeake,Virginia.
Leon,
your fight is over you are in no more pain. Your memory will last in our hearts for a life time. Although you lost contact with us the love for you continued to burn and it always will.
Rest in Peace and one day we will pray to meet you again over on Jesus side.
Love ever lasting
Cousin Lisa A Bell.
