Obituary of Herbert Elbert

Herbert R. Elbert, age 72, of Independence, died Monday, April 23, 2012, at St. Elizabeth Hospice. He was a retired Machinist for Cincinnati Milacron and a life-long member of St. Cecilia Parish. Herbie was a dedicated, volunteer for the Independence Fire Department for 32 years and served as Assistant Chief for 9 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Kentucky Colonel, an avid U.K. fan and enjoyed baseball, and bowling. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather who made life fun for everyone around him. His family was truly his joy and happiness. His parents, Joe and Lena Elbert; and brothers, Joe , Alf, and Randal "Whitey" Elbert preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife (of 53 years), Ruth Ann Rawls Elbert; daughters, Kathy (Joe) Bach of Morning View and Shirley (Kevin) Thornberry of Ft. Wright; son, Jeffrey (Julie) Elbert of Taylor Mill; brother, Wayne Elbert of Independence; eleven grandchildren, Tara Leen, Keith Placke, Adam Bach, Chris Meyer, Chad Bach, Mekenzie Elbert, Jacob Elbert, Alec Elbert, Nick Day, Jessica Day, and Justin Meranda; and eight great grandchildren, Anna Leen, Owen Leen, Ellie Leen, Taylor Placke, Emma Placke, Landen Meyer, Rylie Meyer, and McKenna Day.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Cecilia Church, 5313 Madison Pike, Independence, KY 41051. A brief firemens' prayer service will be held at 1:30 p.m. prior to the Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 2 p.m., all at the church. Interment will be at St. Cecilia Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the St. Cecilia Church, St. Elizabeth Hospice, or Faith Community Pharmacy.
