Nita Ruth, all-around cook and quilt maker
When it came to making mouth-watering candy like fudge and divinity and creams and taffy, "Aunt Nita" - Nita Romain Skeen Ruth - was tops.
"We couldn't wait until Aunt Nita arrived to get some of that great candy," recalled Mrs. Ruth's nephew, Tom Skeen of Harrison, Ohio. "She made all kinds of good things."
Mrs. Ruth, 89, of Petersburg, died Tuesday at a friend's residence in Grayson.
She was a homemaker and a member of Petersburg Christian Church and Boone County Senior Citizens.
Mrs. Ruth enjoyed sewing, cooking and gardening and loved animals.
"She was a very private person and a strong-willed person," said her nephew. "She was a hard worker and very meticulous."
Mrs. Ruth's expertise in the kitchen wasn't confined to candy. She was an excellent all-around cook whose dishes were favorites at holiday family get-togethers.
"I especially remember her turkey and noodles and sweet potato casserole," said her nephew.
Mrs. Ruth enjoyed gardening and she canned lots of green beans and tomatoes.
She also was a prolific quilt maker.
"She was great at sewing and crocheting and probably made 35 or 40 quilts," said Skeen.
Mrs. Ruth was fond of keeping cats as pets. She enjoyed staying busy with church and senior citizens group activities.
Mrs. Ruth's husband, whose name honored two baseball stars - Tyrus Raymond Cobb Ruth - preceded her in death.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Petersburg Christian Church, 6561 Tanner St., Petersburg, Ky., 41080.
