Obituary of Judy S. Tungate

Judy S. Duncan Tungate was hospitalized a dozen times over the past 2½ years as she battled colon cancer, but she always managed to keep a positive spirit. "She fought an unbelievable battle. I couldn't describe how much she fought this thing," said her husband, Larry W. Tungate. "She would find any positive thing she could. If the doctor had 10 negative things and one positive thing, she held onto the positive. She always found some light in any of the darkest moments." Mrs. Tungate, 46, of Independence, died Saturday at her home. She was a former secretary and bookkeeper with the Kenton County Board of Education and a member of Staffordsburg United Methodist Church. "She was a very generous person," said her husband. "She enjoyed doing things for others. She was very much a giver. "She was active with her school duties and in church. Much of her time was spent taking care of her children." Mrs. Tungate enjoyed reading spiritual books and novels. She also liked sewing and made many of her dresses and did alterations. "She was very outgoing, with a lot of close friends she enjoyed spending time with. She was also very close with her sisters." Other survivors include a daughter, Crystal Spellman of Florence; sons, Adam Prather of Cold Spring and Christopher Prather of Independence; her mother, Frances Slayden Duncan of Independence; sisters, Jane Freimuth of Independence and JoAnn Brown of Walton; brothers, Jeffrey Duncan and John Duncan, both of Independence; and three grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home in Florence. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Crittenden Cemetery.
